Welcome to the Season Pass, AF1's official podcast. I'm your host, Jeff Levack, joined by Tom Goss-Goslowski on yet another weekly recap and getting you ready for everything else that's coming up as we get closer and closer and closer to the playoffs. This is week 12 of the show, which means we start with the week 11 recap. Goss, I don't know, I know that you were on the call for Albany-Corpus Christi, so I don't know how familiar you are with what Nashville did to Oregon, but Oregon had a lead at the half. Our dude Dalton Cole, he had a lead at the half, but I guess people are starting to call it Kolka-mania in Nashville as they were able to come back and get this thing done, but big success for Oregon to even have the lead at the half in this game, right?
Goz:00:48:01:36
Oregon was tested. Yes. And no. And follow me on this. Yes. Because we wondered what Oregon was able to do when it started facing tougher competition at how Oregon could find their pants at the postseason. No is they really needed that when they needed the Nashville when, when you figure out how much seasons really left times running out for Oregon. So they don't get that victory, flip it over to the Nashville side. They're in an interesting spot now going forward. We know there's so much talent on the cats team. Can they get that home playoff game? That's the goal. Can they be the number two seed? Are they the team most likely to face Albany potentially in the AF one championship? That's the goal for the cats. They're closer to this now with a victory over Oregon. Wasn't easy though. They were definitely tested in this matchup.
Jeff:01:36:02:28
that defense for Nashville and Tyler Kolka, they both seem to be, I've said, and I'll continue to slap this dead equine around a little bit, I said they were gonna be the team that improved the most each and every week, and they've gotten to a point now where you're looking at that defense and going, well, they can play with anybody, and Kolka's just super accurate, goes out, no play, too big or too small, 187 passing yard, five touchdowns, ran one in. My favorite part is his number one target during this game, Jackson is the guy's last name. I sound confused because he signed on Thursday. He signed on Thursday and had over 120 receiving yards for Nashville. Talk about, hey, good to meet you. What's your name? Nevermind, just go get in the end zone. I think that's a true testament to what Coach Arbette is doing in Nashville, that you can sign a guy a couple of days before the weekend and he's vibing with your dude by the time you get on the field.
Goz:02:29:02:50
That, which you mentioned, having the guys run the roster on Thursday, almost summarizes or becomes the word of the week here on season pass surprise. Whoa, who's this? That's a surprise. I didn't expect that. I didn't know the impact was coming. So a surprise performance. And just remember that term as we go through some other recaps from last weekend's action.
Jeff:02:50:03:57
Vital score cats win that 150 to 36. We moved to the game you were on the call for with your broadcast partner, Andrew Santillo or Boo Boo Santillo. I believe you started calling him. The Firebirds hosted the Tritons. This one, this was a battle for the first quarter, but I think like, guys, I got to give the background to why I think all the players for Corpus Christi deserve an extra pat on the back for this one. Yes, it was a big win for the Firebirds. But as we know, in the world of arena football, travel can sometimes be a bit of an issue. And it was for the Tritons. They had flight issues. They were all supposed to fly into Albany on Friday night. I think about half of them made it to Albany. The other half ended up getting rerouted to Hartford. Their bag somehow ended up in Chicago. So they came into the day missing sleep. half their team, their uniforms, their trainer, I believe we did take care of, we got them a meal and some other stuff too, but for them to go out there and to play as hard as they did, I think is a true testament to the players for the Corpus Christi Tritons.
Goz:03:59:05:31
You know, I mentioned that word surprise, that word surprise popped up here. I don't know if people enjoyed surprise birthday parties when they were younger or avoided them at all costs. I'm not sure if you're somebody when the holidays come around, if you want to know what your significant other or your friends or family are getting you or not. That was the theme of this game. You didn't know what times, what uniform the teams are going to be in, what numbers they were going to wear. The first quarter was an interesting setup, at least clockwise. We have to mention that because that played a factor in the game, especially when it came to how many plays were running the first half across the board, who was going to be the impact players. Was Corpus Christi going to be the team that had a hundred dropped on them or a team that was going to be competitive? Who was going to be? Every time throughout the broadcast, something surprised me. I would say the most surprising part was how close Corpus Christi was able to keep this game in comparison again, to the last time they played over a hundred was posted. And again, it's a whole different team. So surprised across the board and also to the Albany side of it. How do you play that going into a bi-week? Do you show a lot of plays? Do you not, you could argue the first 10 plays for the most vanilla plays of the whole season for the Firebird offense. And you flip it around to the second final play of the second half, first half, second quarter. And it's an offensive lineman scoring on a trick play. So Nicholson gets in, it was surprised across the board, but Albany wins. And I think that's the least surprising of all the results from that wild match up on Saturday night.
Jeff:05:31:06:10
A lot of love to their quarterback, Fred Payton Jr. Actually played with somebody else's helmet for the first half. His bag, one of the ones that was missing, he still was able to throw for 241 yards, four touchdowns. Richie Anderson played for Albany back when I was part of running the Empire. He has the best games against the Albany team. He loves the MVP arena. I see him and I get a big handshake and a hug every time he's in town. But then all he does is go out and catch 118 yards at a touchdown. Two different numbers, as you mentioned, but just this is a guy I think gets overlooked by a lot of teams. You don't realize that Richie Anderson's a true weapon on offense, and he proved it yet again for the Tritons.
Goz:06:11:06:54
The combination of both Anderson and workman on the outside, Anderson, as you mentioned, he's had a few seasons where he's been impact players for other rosters. As for workman, big number seven, who was listed at six foot seven. He had the most of any opposing player who came to the MVP arena so far this season. Who is that guy? Who is that guy warming up? And not only was he warming up and he stuck out on the turf, but also he was warming up with no shoes on. So imagine a six foot seven guy who actually would be bigger. And I don't know if that was because of the travel uniform situation or that's how he does it. I don't know if he's got some Mac Collins in it, right? So, yeah, both of wide receivers are very good players and will continue to keep them in games throughout the season.
Jeff:06:55:08:17
I know this is a conversation for another time, the season's not over yet, but Sam Castronova, 276 passing yards, seven touchdowns, connects with Darian Townsend for a touchdown, 100 plus yards. McCoy, the backup, also hit Townsend for a touchdown. Dwayne Brown, who is probably the offensive player of the year right now, 113 receiving yards, three touchdowns, all from Castronova. I happen to catch some show that like, I was like, man, this is, this is almost as good as the season pass. But I count some show and they, they had Castronova as their second, maybe third in the MVP race right now. Who is first and second? I think they're, we'll talk about the one guy coming up who I definitely think who I have second right now, but like, I, I don't, I think what happens is you start to look at a team like the Albany Firebird to listen, you know, Dwayne Brown, DT, Isaiah Scott, you name it. There's so many great weapons. I think people start to undervalue what Sam Castronova is doing. But Sam Castronova can do anything out there. He ran for most of his career. Now he's got this defense figured out. He's reading so well that he's finding the open man. Heck, he's catching passes and getting clotheslined. And yeah, maybe it's some home cooking for me. I am an Albany guy. But I think if Sam Castronova's not in the conversation to be the MVP for you, I don't know what league you're watching.
Goz:08:18:09:29
I feel like, and I hope this isn't the case. This is why I'm really fascinated by that take of other people who are making content for AF1. Okay. If you could make an argument that Henry Nell's the special teams player of the year and Markel Wade's the returner of the year. and coach where because if the team goes undefeated as the head coach of the year, and if Dwayne Brown's the offensive player of the year, every award's not gonna go to Albany. I don't know if that was the take, because that's a fascinating discussion of some, they're not gonna have a clean sweep of the awards, and I don't think that's because whether or not they deserve it, or more so whoever are the media members or coaches who are voting for those awards are less likely to have Albany across the board. If they had that point, I can hear that out, but I understand what you're saying. That doesn't make any sense for Sam Castor to not be in the MVP. That's not a good enough reason. Just another sport like the NBA, right? The NBA has now had seven MVPs who didn't play in the United States of America who aren't Americans. Dude, is it the media going down on the American? That's a point for another show, but that's. I find that interesting that if Sam somehow going down in rank is for doing nothing wrong, makes no sense, right?
Jeff:09:29:10:36
And listen, you look at the stats of every guy we mentioned, you know, on the offense, they've all become considerably greater with Castro Dover distributing the ball. You're right, let's do that later. Firebirds ended up winning that one, 64-27. Again, Firebirds stay undefeated. They have locked up the number one seed. The road to the championship for the AF1's inaugural season will go through the MVP arena on South Pearl Street. But that's, I gotta give credit to the, to the Tritons on that game. They battled from whistle to whistle and never asked for any, any excuses or anything like that. Billings Outlaws traveled to Salina Liberty. This one kind of a shocker to me. I know Salina's good. I told you that when they got Rakim Cato, they would be a different team. They beat the Billings Outlaws. Malik Henry and Darius Prince look like they're just playing catch with each other out there most of the time. Henry, 234 yards, four passing touchdowns. Prince catches one, goes over the wall. Prince is the king of catching the ball and almost cutting yourself in half on the wall while you're doing it. The downside, Henry also threw four interceptions, but Celina Liberty, go ahead and look at this one, 60 to 41, guys, and I don't know if it was that close.
Goz:10:39:12:03
is the second best team I've seen all season long. They put Albany up against it. If they have two different play calls there at MVP arena, they end the undefeated season for the firebirds. You mentioned what the offense has been able to do with Cato Cato, not just mobile in the pocket, but fantastic throwing the football as a veteran of the game. The defense doesn't make a lot of mistakes, special teams balanced This is, and you'll have fun with this because you and I hear this term a lot, especially when you talk about wagering horses, the old word of value, right? So if we were figuring out who's the long shot on the board, you can make money off of who's the eight to one, 10 to one, 12 to one play. So line, it would be team. We talked about is the value team. of off the board, perfect matchup where they want to be. If they get into the post season, we said this last week, they're the worst matchup for Albany and they're the worst matchup for most teams who don't want to see them on a bracket. They're that good. It just was awful. If you're a Liberty fan that the season started so rough because that hasn't ever felt like a one in five team or a two and five team early on, they struggled so much and it put them in a hole. They have to climb out of, it looks more likely that hole has got a light at the end of the tunnel. They're the best team I've seen post Albany. And it was a surprising result because of how good that team was and even how well Billings played. That's about as good as Billings can go. And Solano was three touchdowns better.
Jeff:12:03:12:58
Don't worry. We're going to have Goss's power rankings and give you the full playoff picture as it stands right now coming up. But let's wrap up the week. That was week 11. When you had the Washington Wolfpack travel to the Southwest Kansas storm. Guys, Southwest Kansas was a team that at the beginning of the year, I was like, well yeah, but they're playing lesser teams, they're doing it. Let's see what happens when they play a good team. They came into Albany, they gave Albany a fight. They have given everybody else a fight. They are now clinched to the playoffs, and they are the, if the season ended today, quote, They would be the number two seed. They beat Washington 63-7. Jalen Morton, who in my opinion is the only other real competitor for the MVP, ran for 73 yards, threw for well over 105 touchdowns, and then by the way, spent the end of the game on the bench while Grissom, his backup, went out and threw for another 101 yards and two touchdowns.
Goz:12:59:14:08
It feels like scheduling. I think you're hitting at this a little bit with that set up to this game. If the Southwest Kansas storm game against Albany wasn't played in what late March, early April, and it was set up for now may. And then all of a sudden they flipped around in June. It would feel like so many different teams, so many different matches. So it's a different field. It's almost as if this team, the Storm, we took them for granted. We just looked at where their record set as the early part of the season. We have divisions at AF1, but it's almost the old conference versus non-conference discussion with the matchups. They're awesome. They're the second best team. They're on pace to have all those things, including a home postseason game. If Albany somehow were to be upset in the round of the semifinals, they would potentially have the opportunity to be the favorite to host a championship game there in Southwest Kansas. All good things. You mentioned the MVP discussion game with more like, yes, I guess if a claim has to be made of where the voting's would go, if it's one of these first, second, third place things, he's going to get a ton of votes. He's going to get a lot of love likely for the postseason awards because of the storm's turnaround here late in the season.
Jeff:14:09:14:51
Jalen Morton reminds me of Sam Castronova in 22, where, you know, you see the difference between the indoor and the outdoor game. So like arena football, yeah, there's less defenders, there's less offensive guys, there's things the defense isn't allowed to do, but it's a tighter space. And guys who are physically gifted, like Morton, are gonna run more, where now that Sam Castronova, the speed of the game and the tightness of the field is cuffed to him, He very rarely tucks and runs. So I think Jalen Morton is still kind of that hybrid between the, you know, playing on Sunday and playing on Saturday night. And if he ever just fully says, you know what, I'm an arena football player, he is going to be somebody to reckon with for a very long time to come.
Goz:14:51:15:09
He's got a nice career ahead of him for sure. And whatever happens for the rest of 26 and 27, I know he's far more concerned about the end of 25, but yes, he is poised to have a really nice future playing this style of football and hopefully continue to carve out his own legacy with this style.
Jeff:15:10:15:18
All right. So here we go. That's the recap of week 11 right here on the season pass. The AF one's official podcast, Jeff Levesque time. I just called you Tom McCloskey.
Goz:15:18:15:23
The internet. I'm so happy. You don't know how happy that just made me.
Jeff:15:24:15:57
For those of you don't know, if you watch the, the, the, the uh scroll when they put up what the people are saying for whatever reason they've decided that gozlowski is mccloskey and it's not tom gozlowski it's todd mccloskey so that that's that's a real thing it's his alter ego uh never give todd mccloskey a credit card it's clearly a fake All right, guys, let's do your power rankings. You kind of hinted to it. I think I've got a decent idea of where you're going, and I'm not sure, but this might be the closest we've ever come to agreeing. Why don't you go ahead and pop them out for us eight to one?
Goz:15:57:16:03
Yeah, I don't want to go faster than usual, but I feel like I've almost showed my hand. It's starting to clear up, right?
Jeff:16:03:16:08
I mean, certainly the picture's clearing up. It is, it is. Even you can't make hot takes out of it anymore.
Goz:16:08:17:58
No, I can't. I have Washington down at the bottom. I have them at eight. They got smoked by Southwest Kansas. Washington, unfortunately hasn't really been able to climb out of that basement with like they'd hoped so far in this season. Oregon still remains at seven. I know they fought and fought and can't excuse me. Nashville was the team they posted up against. It's those two West coast teams that for me are eight and seven six for me. I'm putting billions. And I know the outlaw fans were such fans of mine earlier in this season for saying this could be the number one team in the league. That feels like a very long time ago. I have the outlaws there at six, despite the additions they made, the record isn't moving in the direction that they hope Corpus Christi is at five. Now I can go back and forth. That's the one I fought about the most and most about Corpus Christi, billions, billions, Corpus Christi at six, five Corpus Christi is far more improved. And I think of certain things had gone a different direction with the things they couldn't control. Maybe they even kept that game closer against somebody, but I have them at five. So now that leaves us with four teams. I'm putting the Salina Liberty at four. I know the record doesn't tell us that they're a top team or all the contenders, but we've covered these storylines in the past. It's who's on the turf now making plays. How well are they playing? What can they do? I've got them at four. I've got Nashville at three. The Cats have been consistent all season long. They're slowly figuring out that they can control their own destiny. And they pushed Albany as well. They had a double digit lead in that matchup. Number two is Southwest Kansas. They've been one of the hottest teams in the league. They've continued to win. They deserve that claim. Undefeated, top team. Right now it could be wire to wire. Firebirds remain at number one.
Jeff:18:00:19:38
I don't hate what you did, but you know, I think the difference between you and I is my power rankings are, in my head, I play a tournament where everybody plays everybody and who can beat who. Right now, you summed it up, Washington, I love the passion of the organization. I love the professionalism of the organization. They gotta find that quarterback that fits what they wanna do. They're eight. At seven, for me, right now, it's gonna be Corpus. I think that they just had too much go on. They can prove me wrong. At six, that's where I'm gonna go ahead and pop Billings in right now. You gotta take where they are. you know, Oregon has been winning. They've been winning games. So I could, I could be talking the flip in Oregon and Billings, but that's about it. And then for my, my top four, like you're going over Albany, Southwest Kansas, Nashville. And I guess I got to go. I gotta go Salina. I just, I don't think you want to see Salina enough. Salina finds their way in. That's not a team that you want to see show up for your team on either June 21st or the 28th. You know who they remind me of? Go all the way back to 2018 when we were working with the, with the AFL. And you know, I was the smart ass all year ago. Well, since everybody's in the playoffs, it doesn't matter. You know, you just gotta get there, and a team like the Washington Valor could pop up and win this whole thing. And they did. They brought in Nelson as their quarterback, and they got it done. So, power rankings aren't that different. Maybe I'll do tiers next week, just so we have different things to say.
Goz:19:39:20:20
No, you know what? It's amazing you brought up that example, because going way back to 2018, It was, they waited, they waited, they waited. They said, okay, we figured out these teams, we're going to line up the perfect matchups. They played really good defense, which won them that championship and played their way out of it. And they understood, okay, here's where we struggle on offense. Let's try to chew up some clock, keep them off the field. And that's been a storyline we've hit on a lot about the Albany Firebirds. And I'm sure to the Southwest would be the same way of, hey, if you play some really good defense and you keep them off the field, you have a chance to pull these upsets and there are so many similarities between those teams and that team in 2018. And now this is a line of team in 2025. Absolutely. Oh man.
Jeff:20:20:20:56
So there's the power rankings. It is the pardon me. Season one season passed. I just got pollen. I was just, I mean, it just attacked me. It just flew into the room. I got choked up when you talked about Albany losing. Let's talk about week 12, three games in your menu. And right now we will get it started with the Wolfpack at the Liberty. This is, listen, the Liberty need this game. The Wolfpack needs some respect. I feel like it's going to be Celina all day long, but I do feel like we have to, we can't just write off Washington at this point.
Goz:20:57:21:14
The words pivotal monumental season changing are actually fitting for a game like this because if Celina loses now the whole thing's a mess because of wind percentage, because of tiebreakers, because of everything that can happen between now and we're going to get, we're going to get to all that in a minute.
Jeff:21:14:21:14
Don't worry.
Goz:21:15:21:34
Like it makes everything a lot more complicated. If you root for chaos, you root for a Salina loss here. I would take the Liberty for the win. They are better. They're playing better. They have more talent. But if you are a fan of chaos, a Salina loss would lead far more to a chaotic scenario as we enter into June.
Jeff:21:34:21:58
That's the Seoul Saturday game, that's gonna be a 7.30 kickoff on Saturday. Moving on to Sunday, 6 p.m. kickoff when the Corpus Christi Tritons host the Nashville Cats. I think everything you just said about the Liberty, let's go ahead and say it about Nashville. Like Nashville is a win away from being in, but they can, they can really make a mess of things by not winning this game.
Goz:21:58:22:42
Exactly right. Same fitting the difference here with Nashville. You wonder about how defensively they can play up with Corpus Christi, Corpus Chris Christie has those two big wide receivers, Anderson. We touched on earlier in the show, work them in as well. Does Nashville have enough bodies on the outside to figure that out? That is an interesting storyline to watch Peyton jr. You mentioned if he's got the right helmet on And by the way, the other thing about Corpus Christi, he can move in the pocket. I actually wondered, like, with, I believe, zero rushing attempts in the first half for Corpus Christi, don't be shocked if there's more Peyton Jr. play calls. I'll take Nashville in the fourth quarter, but I would not be shocked at all if Corpus Christi is leading that game in the fourth.
Jeff:22:43:23:00
All right, we talked about our power rankings. We both said, listen, Oregon Billings, Oregon Billings, Lightning traveled to the Outlaws Sunday. It's an 8 p.m. Eastern time kick. This one, this could very well decide the fourth playoff spot, or at least how the path to it will be held.
Goz:23:01:23:38
I know we've talked about stats, numbers, awards, all these things. High scoring game. This is going to be like a 72-65 final. This one might touch 80. And here, I'll make a bold, hot take here on this. Darius Prince has more receiving yards in this game than any wide receiver this season. That's how big of a game he has for Billings in this one. I'll say Darius gets over the 200 yard mark and potentially again, season high for any receiver. I'll take Billings and what could be one of the highest scoring games of the season between two teams we've seen in AF1.
Jeff:23:40:24:48
All right, it is the season pass AF1's podcast. That's the games. And I don't know if you've noticed, the current top two seeds will be sitting back and watching to see who's gonna potentially play against them in the playoffs. So guys, let's get that playoff picture for you. Number one is done. The road to the AF1 championship, it goes through the MVP arena on Trans Finder Field. Also the proud sponsor of the football for all of AF1 Trans Finder. Albany's got that locked up. They have one regular season game left, and that will be on June 14th, 7 p.m. kickoff against Washington. So they're now on a race for perfection. No one has ever been perfect and won a championship on the top arena leagues, so that's one. Not a lot to say. I mean, it's pretty much done. two right now is the Southwest Kansas storm. They have clinched the playoffs guys. They need to win at least one of the games against Salina. They play Salina twice, once at home, once in a way as good as line has been. If Salina goes ahead and beat Southwest Kansas twice, not only do they deserve to be in the playoffs, Maybe Southwest Kansas doesn't deserve to be that second seed.
Goz:24:49:25:04
Yes. And that's also doable for Southwest Kansas at times when if we are to evaluate this team in early May or late April, we would have never thought they'd be in this spot because of what the other competition looked like in the league. That is a doable scenario for the storm to get a home playoff game.
Jeff:25:06:25:26
All right, third seed right now is Nashville. If Nashville wins this week, we've told you again, they're playing the Tritons in Corpus Christi. They are in the playoffs. If they win out, and again, they play Corpus on the road, they play Billings on the road, and then they host Corpus, and Southwest Kansas loses at least one, Nashville will grab that second seed.
Goz:25:27:26:12
a little help needed for the cats. They'll be favored in all of those games going forward this season. You would think the storm would be as well. That is a huge difference between having that home game and not have that home game, especially when the crowds get hot, especially when you talk about something as simple as a kicker looking at like, Oh, I'm familiar with this. I can knock down a deuce more likely. I know how this feel is. I know how the church Now look, there's a chance they play each other too. If that's a two, three matchup, you might see that road trip happen. So both of those teams, look, the first goal for Nashville should always be just to get in and then you can figure out home field advantage. But the fact that the scenario you laid out there, both are in play, keep winning simple and easy. There's the advice, Cat Fitz.
Jeff:26:13:26:36
Here's something for you. The last team that controls their own destiny is Corpus Christi. They currently sit at four. They need two wins to clinch a playoff berth. Here's the bad news. You're home for Nashville, you're at Oregon, and you're at Nashville. You need to beat Nashville and Oregon, potentially Nashville twice, to lock up that spot.
Goz:26:38:27:12
they're going to be a dog potentially in all three of those games. They're going to be in need of an upset to clinch the playoff spot, which is a rarity netting sport. Hey, to get into the post season, you've got, no one's going to believe in the path that you have in front of you. A team, I get, I gave up a hundred points this season, a brand new roster. They've gone through a lot. I think we've kind of shown our hand through this weekend's edition of the season best. That doesn't seem like the most likely scenario of a team being the fourth team in the postseason. There might be another one you're about to show us that I feel a little bit more confident in.
Jeff:27:12:27:56
All right. So there's four teams left. Let's just go ahead and do the one thing. Washington is eliminated. The eighth seed is they are the only team eliminated right now. Everyone else has a chance. And I'm going to say the same thing about the remaining three teams, guys. They all need to win out and they would all need help on top of winning out. So they need to win out. They need Corpus to lose. They need Nashville to lose for them to be able to get in. So I would assume only one of these three will have a real chance to make it. Oregon needs to win out, needs help. They play at Billings, host Corpus at Nashville. Celina needs to win out, need help. They host Washington at Southwest Kansas, host Southwest Kansas. Billings needs to win out, needs help, host Oregon, host Nashville. They're at Oregon. Nobody has an easy path ahead of them.

The Southwest Kansas draw for Celina is obviously not easy. Gosh, that is a lot more difficult trying to figure this out too. But Corpus Christi says, oh, we're gonna have so much fun for the final few weeks of AF1. There's no, oh, they're definitely locked in and they're the team. You see the top three, Nashville, Southwest Kansas, and Albany. That is gonna be an awesome battle till we hit June 14th.

Billings versus Nashville in week 13 could be the game that decides everything. So we're still it's here's the beauty of this league right now is there's still seven of eight teams alive in the postseason. Everybody wants to talk about how top heavy it is with the way Albany's playing. All it takes is one game, any given Saturday in our league as it goes, or Sunday if it's on Vice Sports. But very, very exciting end of the season ahead of us, fired up, ready to go. I do find it interesting that if you are an Albany fan, you've got one game left. You're already locked up, you got one game left. You get through that game. then it's all about June 21st, 7 p.m., that is when the playoffs will be for the first round in Albany.
