Welcome to Season Pass, the AF1 podcast. I am your host, Jeff Levesque. I hope you had a great weekend, enjoyed all the football games between Evergreen now and Vice. I was on the road, picked up a little bit of cold. Tell you about that one coming up in a little bit. But first, let's get this started. Where the week started, all eight teams in action in week seven. Thursday night in Washington, the Wolfpack hosts the Nashville Cats. This Cats team is no joke, but neither is Ed Crouch. He's no slouch, my friend. The quarterback for the Wolfpack and their defense played inspired football. They were really, really good. However, the Cats are just special. It feels like they're a kind of team that you're not going to see in the playoffs. Defensive back Amos Coleman III, he was opportunistic. Something you don't see very often. He got himself a kick six. Manny, the kicker for Washington, he put that thing in a line drive, which is extremely dangerous. You don't want to line drive the football on a kick, whether it be a field goal or a kickoff. in this league, because if you do, you put that team, your defense, in very, very dire straits. And that was proved by Coleman, who took the thing all the way back, full field, four, six points. That was special. And then Tyler Kolka, the quarterback for the Cats. He is on fire in this game. Five passing touchdowns. Three of those went to Antoine Grant. Now, if you don't know who Grant is, Grant, when I met him, he went by the nickname of Big Grizz. He's got a lot of nicknames. He's a big, powerful wide receiver, and if he develops this relationship with Kolka, that could make Nashville very, very difficult to beat. which Washington found out as the Cats roll 68-20 in Washington. I know it's a lopsided score, but I am telling you right now, Washington is better than that score. They were in this game a lot. Nashville is playing special football, and I think they're only going to get better. They got that Hall of Fame coach. Our bet is no joke. Watch out for Nashville as this season goes on. We kick forward to Saturday where we had two games in action. Starting at 730 at night, you had the Oregon Lightning taking on the Salina Liberty. That's on Evergreen. You can watch it right now if you'd like. The knock on Liberty has been pretty, pretty, you know, smooth. They haven't played a full game yet. Their quarterback hasn't really stepped all the way up yet. Well, let's see what happens now. Now they've got Rakim Cato. Can they get it done? Will they be able to get their first win of the season over the Lightning? Spoiler alert, Cato's for real. He is special. We know he's going against a special guy in Dalton Cole for the Lightning. You love that quarterback. That's my dude who actually had one hell of a game. He ran in a score, he threw for four more, but it wouldn't be enough. The Liberty defense began to batter Cole in the second half. Cato was the true difference maker, as mentioned, for Salina under center. Get this, Rakim Cato with the Liberty. 8 of 15 passing, 92 yards. You're like, Levesque, that's not that big, whatever. What if five of those completions were for touchdowns? They were. The man was dialed in. You put that together with the fullback for the catch, Tracy Brooks, 52 yards on the ground, two rushing touchdowns. The Liberty get in the win column. They take down the Lightning 47-32. The more comfortable Cato gets together with Coach O'Neill and the Liberty, this could be a very interesting team to watch moving forward, my friends. Also, Saturday night, the Southwest Kansas Storm traveled to Corpus Christi to take on the Tritons. This one, also on Evergreen. This one, maybe the most controversial game of this short, young season so far, as both teams really had a shot to win this one. The Tritons were part of the and-a-zero club coming in. They hadn't lost a game yet. We had a lot of talk about who had they played, who hadn't they played. The Southwest Kansas Storm have proven to be a tough team to face. They've got a legit MVP candidate with their quarterback, Jalen Morton, and he looked every bit of MVP out there in this game. He connected with six different receivers. That's almost unheard of in the arena football game. 264 passing yards, six touchdowns. He led the storm with rushing yards with 23. I mean, how do you spell Jalen Morton? It looks like it might be three letters, MVP. I say it a lot, but the dude is putting on one heck of a case for himself. Trenton's quarterback, Fred Payton, he may have only thrown two touchdowns, but he also ran for two touchdowns. And he also was joined by their fullback, Josiah King, for another two touchdowns. This thing came down to the wire. We even had people having to break out the rule book after the half to figure out when you could score a deuce and when you couldn't. there's such a thing as a penalty in the bank. So basically what it comes down to is you score your touchdown, you get a penalty, the deuce is not available for you. No matter what happens on the extra point or anything like that, on your kickoff, the following kickoff, you cannot score a deuce if you have a penalty in the bank, okay? So that's what happens is they kick it through the uprights, People get a little confused, they put the two on the board, they come back, the two's not on the board anymore, that was ultimately the right call, but it was a little bit confusing for people enjoying the game at home. That part 100% did work out though. We did take it right down to the wire in this game, it's 40-40. And something you don't see very often. I don't think I've seen it since Varsity Blues. The hook and ladder. The hook and ladder is how the Southwest Kansas Storm get this last second upset victory over the Corpus Christi Tritons. Now, there's still a lot of talk about this game and how it ends. Was the knee down? Did he fully score? I will tell you right now that if I was a Tritons fan, I'd be upset. If I was a Storm fan, I'd just smile and walk away with the W. 47-40, Southwest Kansas Storm, get the W. Just quietly, just walk away, just do it. It's like hiking the ball. Just hike the ball and move on, my friends. But the Tritons look forward to a big game this weekend, and they are gonna be angry. So we'll get to that in a second. Now, let's talk about the fourth and final matchup of week seven. It was the Albany Firebirds in a rematch of last week's game against the Billings Outlaw, this one on Vice TV, and this one was an Easter Sunday fistfight. I mean, not high scoring. It's rare that all you talk about is defense in the game of arena football, but this AF1 matchup, these are two teams that are familiar with each other, and familiarity breeds contempt. They are rivals, real rivals. Even though it's a tough road back and forth, they don't get along and they got it on. This thing ends 37 to 7. Sam Castronova is putting on a heck of a case for MVP himself, but the real American beer player of the game for this one, former Billings Outlaw receiver, current Albany Firebirds receiver, Dwayne Brown. 104 yards, two touchdowns. He was actually mad at himself because he should have had a third touchdown that he didn't actually pull in. This game was all about the defense. The Firebirds defense was all over. all over the place, swarming, five sacks, a safety. It was not what you normally get out of arena football, but it was still exciting and fun nonetheless. And I will tell you right now that there is no doubt in my mind that the trip from Albany to Billings, Montana may be the longest and hardest trip in the Hall of Sports. It was not easy, my friends, that is for sure, but the guys for the Albany Firebirds showed up and they got it done.
Bill:07:39:07:44
Speaking of travel, and you say it not being easy, what are you talking about there, Jeff?
Jeff:07:45:09:08
Producer Bill! Um, well, this trip was… Let's put it like this, arena football, AF1, it's ballin' on a budget. We don't have NFL money, we don't have NBA money. I don't know if we have WNBA money anymore with the private jets they're starting to get with Caitlin Clark. So it comes down to planning. So what we were doing this trip around, the easiest way to get from Albany to Billings was to bus to LaGuardia, fly from LaGuardia to Denver, Denver to Bozeman, drive in, that way we had vehicles to get around town with. And one thing went wrong, the bus was late. So we had to get all of our plans redone, the Albany Firebirds, and I traveled with them, I was there, I was part of it, 26 hours of travel to get to this cave. We left the Albany area at 1.30 in the morning on Saturday. We arrived in Billings, Montana at the hotel at 1.30 in the morning local time, which it's a two hour time difference. So we literally flew from LaGuardia. to Atlanta, we had an hour and a half delay in Atlanta, to Denver, we had a four hour delay in Denver, and then we flew to Bozeman and we drove, which by the way, the rental company's computers were down, so they had to do everything by hand, 26 hours of travel, and the guys didn't complain once, they got out there, they got ready, and they handled business in Billings.
Bill:09:09:09:38
So when you come on a road trip like that, I mean, we're talking about, you know, a lot of coordination has to go into these trips. I mean, you have equipment, like you talked about, like the NFL, they can fly all their stuff out with the team when the team leaves on the day that they go, but this is balling on a budget, as you said. So, you know, some of that stuff, I mean, you gotta send out the equipment, days prior to leaving, I'm assuming, right?
Jeff:09:38:10:25
Yes. So we actually, this year, we've got a bunch of cargo vans. They will wagon train out before the team leaves, and they'll be there in advance. We do have it down to a bit of a science if it's a shorter flight. This is one of the reasons that before the season started, we had the Orlando Predators in this league. We like playing them. It's a quick shot down the coast. You don't even have a layover or nothing. You just go right down. Our guys will check one bag, and that will be their pads, their shoulder pads, their head, their helmet, everything like that. It's right in that one bag. But now that we have these cargo vans, we have guys, we have literal people who are off-season truckers who are able to get our stuff out there via the vehicles. It saves money, and it makes sure that the guys have everything they need exactly how they need it. No chance of it getting lost, you know, by an airport or anything like that.
Bill:10:26:10:57
Yeah, I mean, I assume that worrying about lost luggage or lost equipment would be a concern, especially when you do air travel these days and anything's a wild card. And, you know, when you travel on a budget, you're also staying in some, you know, Not the Ritz, you know, like, you know, some of these professional teams obviously stay at the highest end hotels. And, you know, it's not necessarily that way all the time for AF1.
Jeff:10:58:12:19
No, but the beauty of what this league has done is the home team is responsible for finding the place for the road team to stay. So you kind of get this honor system, you know, where it's, it's a lot better. Obviously there's always a situation that'll occur where maybe there's a convention in town and a lot of the better rooms are booked up and you have to make some concessions. But the way it comes down is so when you come to our area, we're gonna put you up at the Clock Tower Hotel or the Century House or Rivers Casino because those are business partners and sponsors of the team. you know you're gonna stay well. Now we go stay with you and you put us at, you know, the roadside, you know, motor lodge and, you know, we've got roommates that are six to eight legged. Okay, well now we're not gonna take good care of you when you come back. So it's a little like mutually assured destruction at this point. This league is, we all are partners in this together and everybody takes pride in you liking our town after you leave. So it's been, this has been good. I have been part of it, what you're talking about where, You know, you call down to the front desk and go, hey, has there ever been a mold test in this room? Has there ever been, like, and they don't know what you're talking about. So, but this league, luckily, everybody's very honorable thus far and trying very hard to take care of their partners.
Bill:12:19:12:59
Well, that's, that's definitely a very important thing, especially when it comes to getting rest and, uh, being prepared to actually play a game. I mean, you can't be worried about your accommodations and your luggage, your equipment, uh, you know, that stuff, it's all very vital. And then, you know, when it boils down to it, you know, when it comes to game time, you know, you said you traveled with a team, uh, this week, you know, What time do you guys kick off? Like what time do you have to get to the field? I mean, do you get to practice before the game? Do you get an opportunity to see the field before the actual game or how does all that stuff work?
Jeff:13:00:14:33
In a perfect world, so in this particular trip, we planned on being in Billings at our hotel before 3 p.m. on Saturday, which would have given the guys plenty of time to rest, relax, and we would have been at the building, the arena, Metro Park, at noon the next day. But because of the travel, we didn't get there till 1.30. The guys aren't going to bed until 2 a.m., but we still have to be at the building, you know, between 12.30 and 1 o'clock in the afternoon because you stretch pre-game meal. And then, yeah, you have some time to practice. There's field time supplied by the other team. But this was a 4 p.m. kickoff. It was Easter Sunday. So these guys had to get all their rest and all their recuperation in quickly. They had to, as much as they were, you know, some of the guys were able to sleep on the ride. We had, like I said, we had rental vehicles. I was the last second addition to the trip. I wanted to go out and be part of it and see what the broadcast was and back our guys up. I end up renting my own vehicle. And as I'm getting in, the doors pop open. And because again, these guys are used to this. They travel, they know how to do this. Isaiah Scott and Dwayne Brown, two of our top receivers, pop in the back of my car and be like, okay, we're ready, boss. Like, let's go. And they slept the whole way. So I joked with them, because they both had monster games. They both got in the end zone. I was like, you know what? I'll Uber you guys anytime. I'll be the Alfred, you're Batman or Robin, whenever you want. But they're smart. They know, like, get in the vehicle with the most room. so I can get a chance to maybe conk out a little bit, get some sleep, even on that two-hour drive or whatever it is. But yeah, you've got to get that rest, you've got to get recuperated, and then get right back into your pads and get to work.
Bill:14:34:15:00
Yeah, it's a, it's a quick turnaround. I mean, you don't really have the luxury of, uh, you know, spending multiple nights on the road and practicing and getting ready for the game. I mean, it's gotta be, as we've discussed, you know, budget friendly and, uh, you know, that's the way these leagues work. And. It is pretty wild. Like, so when you have teams come and visit you guys, you said you put them up where?
Jeff:15:00:15:49
Again, the Rivers Casino and… That's like my favorite place to put everybody because in all, my hope is they'll go and enjoy the table games and not get any rest. That's my hope, but… There's a little gamesmanship in the way that you set that up. Listen, I'm a member of the community. I want people to enjoy it when they come here. But we have a great relationship with the Clocktower Hotel. It's a newer hotel. It's become part of the Century Hill, which has been around forever. For people who aren't from this area, Century Hill is that place where when you're gonna have a wedding and you wanna stay at the same place, that's it. They've got it, it's very classy. They bought the hotel next door and renovated it. And in the time that was happening, we developed a great relationship with them. So between the two locations, our guys will stay at one and the other team will stay at the other.
Bill:15:50:16:05
Well, that's, yeah, that's a good setup. And, you know, I guess with those teams that are basically, you know, like we just discussed, Billings, you know, they don't have as many accommodations as, say, the state capital of New York.
Jeff:16:06:16:13
The Trailhead Inn, where they had us, that was a nice place. It's another, you could tell it was a slightly, it's like a motel, but it was nice.
Bill:16:13:16:33
Yeah, Billings has a lot of history. I mean, there's definitely, it's a historic Montana town and I've actually spent a night in Billings myself. So it's, it is. It is, it's a great place. How big of an arena did you play in on your game?
Jeff:16:34:19:12
Metro Park, I think it's actually a pretty good size arena. The way the seats go up, it kind of reminds me of Cameron Indoor where Duke plays. They just, because the first row, the first level is very, you know, very normal. It's not a huge, the way up isn't huge. But the second level, I mean, they just look, they go straight up in the air the way that you would sit in them. But obviously Easter Sunday, not as big of a crowd as they were hoping for, but they were loud. It was a loud 1,000, 2,000 people that were inside that place. They love their team and they, man, they talk just as much smack as anybody else. You know, my guys got into it a little bit, but one of the downsides of it not being full is you could hear what everybody was saying to each other, which was a little uncomfortable. But no, it's a good size arena. It's one of the ones where their scoreboard is center hung. So we did have one where their kicker put it off the scoreboard, which gives you the ball and the 20. So it was, each one of these arenas, like, one of the differences between arena and, you know, the NFL, everything is uniform. There's, you know, the rare chance you hit, what was it, in AT&T, you'd be able to hit the scoreboard once in a while. they're not exactly uniform in this league. The field itself is. It's gonna be, it's a 50-yarder. The only difference is sometimes the end zones are rounded out for the hockey arenas, and sometimes they're squared out like they are for us where we have that different setup. But aside from that, the scoreboards can be center hung. They can get in the way. Things like that do happen. The pads are a little softer in places that have been around longer, it feels like. It's definitely an adventure watching the guys go out there and go to battle every week. That's wild. And then you have to worry about getting back. Well, so this is the beauty of this one. Myself and our media director, we came back on Monday. The guys, because it just makes more sense than rather than spend all the time in the airports, they stayed in Billings. Thanks to Coach Cedric Walker and team owner of the Billings Outlaws, Steven Titus, they had to practice on the field at Metra. and then they went right to San Antonio and they're gonna get ready to go play Corpus Christi this Friday. So rather than jump back on a plane Monday and you're back on a plane Thursday, work with your friends in the league and get the most rest you can and get down to Corpus Christi and hopefully get a win. It's kind of like the NBA.
Bill:19:12:19:30
Well, yeah, but I mean, it's staying on the road and then not having to worry about getting back and forth. Because as we know, travel just kicks your butt. I mean, you're under the weather for a reason and it's, you know, travel's tough. So, you know, in that regard.
Jeff:19:30:19:51
I spent eight hours in Denver this weekend. I spent almost as much time in Denver as I did in Montana. I had two four-hour delays in Denver. Well, you should have hit me up because I was around. I really should have, I was too busy feeling sorry for myself. On the road home, you wouldn't have wanted me. I sound a million times better now. The one plus of this was the coffin kept people from wanting to sit next to me, so that was good.
Bill:19:52:20:22
Yeah, the whole travel and accommodations and just making sure everybody gets from point A to point B, it is kind of like coordinating a I don't know, a school field trip. I mean, Zeke told us last week in his interview that, or two weeks ago, you know, about some of the trials and tribulations that he had on the road. And, you know, he, he had some, uh,
Jeff:20:23:20:42
Yeah, he just- I don't think he'd mind me telling you that, so he chipped a tooth on this trip. Oh, no. So we had to find a dentist in Billings and get Zeke a dentist so he could get his tooth fixed while we were on the road. Oh, man. It's one of those, you just- So you're doing dental on the fly.
Bill:20:42:20:49
Yeah, something like that. I mean, injuries, sure, but having to find a dentist, ah.
Jeff:20:49:21:12
Right. Well, see, like up here, one of our sponsors is a dentist. So we have a, yeah, so. You're not a hockey team, though. This isn't hockey, this is football. That's why they all have their teeth. That's why you need a dentist. Touche, but he's also a sleep doctor. So he sponsors for his anti-snoring stuff So it's like, you know, but I I've been able to get guys in with him and then we call, you know Coach Walker and Steven Titus.
Bill:21:12:21:24
Hey, do you have a dentist and Zeke goes over and they take care of him Is I have to follow up with what you just said. Do you have a lot of guys with sleep issues or sleep apnea?
Jeff:21:25:22:58
um, you know the funny thing is They all talk about it, and none of them make the call while they're here. It's the weirdest thing. Well, you figure almost all your big dudes are gonna have some kind of snoring. You know what I mean? That's what I was wondering. Yeah, so I have it, so that's how I became friends with Dr. Ear and the team. But they're always like, guys, the door is open. Come see us, we'll talk. You think about it, we mentioned it. You get into town at 1.30 in the morning, you're gonna play at 4 p.m. the next day. You gotta get to sleep, you can't, whatever. So that's why we always thought it was a great partnership with a guy who's gonna help you stop snoring and sleep better. Your roommate snores. For years, I couldn't travel with a roommate because of my snoring. So now it's like I get roommates. I'm like, ah, maybe I need to not wear the mouthpiece. But no, yeah, it's amazing when you really start to dig in to what these guys could use, and then look into the people in your own community, and you can start putting them together. Like, we have financial people who sit and meet with the team each year, and try to teach them how to invest, you know, the money they do make in this league, and all these things. Because the more you do for these guys, the more they want to come back to you. It's all one-year deals. So, like, if a guy wants to, you know, if you don't take care of a player, and then they go visit, you know, Billings, and they, Billings, all the guys are like, oh man, they do this for us, they do that for us. Now everybody's going to want to sign with Billings. So you've got to take care of your guys. You got to treat them the best you possibly can. And sometimes it's not, you know, actually the paycheck. It's the, you know, hearing them out when they need something and finding the right way to support that problem and get it fixed for them.
Bill:22:58:23:00
You're basically dealing with a free agent every year.
Jeff:23:02:23:46
And that's their power. You treat them poorly, they're gone. And I would think the pay structure for most teams is pretty similar. Some teams are willing to put a little bit more to a quarterback or a little bit less to a defensive back or whatever it is. But the money's not that different. So it's gotta be a… How do I let you know how much we care? Put you up in a great place like the clock tower, put you in touch with a dentist when you need one, and do those little things. When you have a bad road trip, hear the guys out. And I was with them, so they knew it wasn't planned. We were supposed to have one stop, it was supposed to be a quick trip, it was supposed to be easy. And things, what is it, man plans and God laughs. It was one of those trips.
Bill:23:48:24:11
Well, it is very interesting to hear the inside story about travel and accommodations and basically how the AF1 actually works because I think some of the listeners don't know the ins and outs. And so it's really cool to hear it from one of the executives and somebody that was just on the road and also is struggling.
Jeff:24:11:24:29
So with that being said, We're getting better though. That's the thing too, is like the AF1's a growing league. So the better we get, the more we prove that we belong, the better the partners you get, and then things get easier and easier and easier. And the next thing you know, we're the WNBA with chartered flights. That's the dream.
Bill:24:29:24:41
There you go. Everybody's got to have a dream. But Jeff, thank you for taking us behind the scenes of the AF1. And let's look forward to next week's games. So take it away, Jeff.
Jeff:24:45:30:54
I'm glad you asked. There he goes, producer Bill, popping in. Who knew I was gonna get interviewed? That's cool, I kinda like that. The season passed where you never know what's gonna happen next. Moving on in the schedule, all eight teams are gonna be in action again this week and it starts Friday night in Billings. We were just there, the Billings Outlaws now with a two game losing streak, both to the Albany Firebirds. They will host the Salina Liberty. This is a great game to figure out where both these teams truly stand, and it will be on Vice TV. This is the deal. Celina, I said, get a quarterback, you're gonna be dangerous. They got a dangerous quarterback in Rakim Kato. Billings, Sean McFarlane, that nasty fullback of theirs, he's on the IL, he's not gonna be playing. Can Billings rebound? Can Billings get back to what we believe they are, what they should be? I believe they can. But it's going to be tough to do Friday night against the Salina Liberty, who again, got their first win. Oh, this is gonna be so much fun. Staying on Friday night, eight o'clock on Evergreen, the Albany Firebirds. We just talked about how hard it was to get to Billings. Much easier trip to Corpus Christi. They are already in Texas, ready to take on the Tritons. But this is a very angry Corpus team. They feel like they were robbed. They think they still belong with Albany in the and zero club. And by the way, some big time alumni of the Albany football area, Darius Prince, Dwayne Hollis are there in Corpus and they're going to look to show out against their former team. if you don't have evergreen now yet, I don't know what you're waiting for. It is free. It's just an email. You need it before Friday, this game. It's got everything I'm telling you. It's the, it's the Hatfields, the McCoys, these two teams that have, I mean, just They haven't played before, and they already hate each other. This is beautiful. I can't wait. Staying on Friday, 9.30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, the Washington Wolfpack head to the Oregon Lightning. This is going to be a good one, man. This is a lot of fun. Ed Crouch Jr. versus Dalton Cole. They're going to battle it out of the QB position. Wolfpack versus Lightning. It's the Battle of the West Coast. These are two teams that aren't getting a lot of respect, but you don't want to play them because they play tough, and they've got good quarterbacks. This is a quarterback-driven league. You got guys like Crouch and Cole, you're gonna fight. Cole took a battering last week. Will he be at his top? I can't wait. I just can't wait. It's another great game on Evergreen right there for you. Saturday, Nashville Cats take on the Southwest Kansas Storm, 7 p.m. on Evergreen. Storm have got an MVP candidate in Jalen Morton. Can he score enough against Nashville, who I think is the most improved team and will continue to get better? Jalen Morton, Tyler Kulka, that's a quarterback battle. If Kulka to Grant becomes one of those touchdown calls that you hear people making all the time, Nashville could become very, very scary. About a week ago, we talked about the power rankings. Now, Tom Goslowski, he's been on the call for the Vice game the last two weeks. His power rankings have got him in a little bit of trouble. I've decided to do my own power rankings. I'm not afraid. I'm also thinking it's pretty easy if you just pay attention to the actual games and not just last year's records. Quickly, I will tell you that, number one, you gotta take the undefeated team. The Albany Firebirds, they've been there, they've done that, and they've still got an end zero. Number two for me, and this could be where I get a little bit of talk back, the Nashville Cats right now, I think they are that dang good. Billings, I'm gonna drop you down to three. I had you at two. I think you got some problems now without McFarland, but you're still a team to beat. Four is the Southwest Kansas Storm. Jalen Morton and this team, this defense is hard-hitting. They're swarming. Look out for them. Five, Corpus Christi. Yes, you only have one loss, but this is the game. You show up and you even put a fight against Albany, I might move you up my rankings. Number six, Celina, you are jumping up my rankings because you have a quarterback. If you continue to play the way you played last week, you're going to move up even higher. Oregon, you're 7. Washington, you're 8. I'm ready to move both of you up. Love both your quarterbacks. I think you've got a lot of upward momentum for you. But there's only 8 teams. Somebody had to be 7 and 8. It's you guys for this one. That is the season pass, the AF1 podcast. My name is Jeff Levesque. Please feel free to reach out to me whenever you get a chance on X. It's at the Jeff Levesque.
