On August 3rd, 1983, less than a year before the release of Purple Rain, the attendees of a benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre, in Minneapolis, were witnesses to history. On that night, in the very first live performance by Prince and the newly minted Revolution, the public heard for the first time many of the songs that would, just 10 months later, thrust Prince into legend and mark a tectonic shift in the musical landscape that would reverberate for decade. In this Backtrack, we look back at, remember, and debate one of the greatest soundtracks of all time – Purple Rain.
