INTRO
Here is a snappy summary of the news – a weekly digest of the latest events and happenings at home and abroad. I’m your host, Rodge Bigsby and this is your Retrotone News Minute!
Greetings Mr. & Mrs. America and all the tremors along the San Andreas... brace yourselves Lotusland!
1) IN TECTONIC PLATE NEWS
This is no Hollywood Disaster Flick. This here is the real deal. California... is REELING from a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Southern California last Friday evening, while the stars were fast asleep. Why it was just a day after the region was hit with a magnitude 6.4 quake, according to KTLA News. These two MASSIVE earthquakes, destroyed roads, triggered fires, scared the bejeebies out of Rodge, and wrecked havoc on the region -- revealing a fantastic fissure in the Earth so spectacular it could be seen from space. Friday's quake had an epicenter 11 miles north-northeast of Ridgecrest, California. The tremblers could be felt 100’s of miles away, from Phoenix to Las Vegas. What’s more… aftershocks have occurred, on an average of once a minute since Friday night. No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported. The last major quake to rock California along the San Andreas fault zone was in 1906, when a 7.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent fire leveled parts of San Francisco and killed 3,000 people, the DEADLIEST in US history. Geologists claim, surviving more than 100 years without major seismic activity along the fault zone IS AN ANOMALY, which COULD portend a massive earthquake along the infamous fault. Rodge says prepare now. Retrofit structures to withstand seismic force before the next significant quake — or the “Big One” — strikes! Hold onto your hats, Golden State!
2) AND NOW… IN SPORTS
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP WINNERS - THE US RETURNS AS 4 TIME WORLD CHAMPIONS
On Sunday, the US Women's National Team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 and won the Fifa Women's World Cup for the fourth time. This year's tournament has broken records and seen its fair share of debate - on politics, politeness and otherwise…. Starting with Co-Captain and Fifa MVP, Megan Rapinoe who made headlines for criticising President Donald Trump and championing LGBT rights and women's equality in football. In addition… the USWNT made World Cup History by achieving the biggest ever win margin after defeating Thailand 13-0. Great Bouncing Soccer Balls! That’s outstanding. Germany held the previous record, defeating Argentina 11-0 in 2007. But the tournament favourites were met with backlash over whether or not the goals (and their celebrations) were excessive. Star player Alex Morgan - who celebrated all her goals - told ESPN the celebrations were because "these are goals that we have dreamed of our entire lives". You GO GIRLS!

AMAZON STRIKES BACK! PRIME DAY WILL PAY…. BIG TIME
While Amazon is busy hyping up this year's Prime Day extravaganza, its workers will be boycotting the big business blowout. Staff at a warehouse in Shakopee, Minnesota will hold six hours of strikes on July 15th (the start of Prime Day) to demand less stringent quotas and the conversion of more temporary workers into permanent employees. The quotas make the work dangerous and unreliable, according to the workers, and permanent work will help create a "livable future." The tech giant has declined to comment on the strike. Bad Form Amazon. Bad Form.
4) NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT HOW AWFUL PEOPLE CAN BE
DISNEY CASTS BLACK ACTRESS AS NEW 'LITTLE MERMAID' AND PEOPLE ARE MEAN
When Disney announced that Halle Bailey, a teen actress and one-half of the singing group Chloe x Halle, had landed the role of Ariel in the forthcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, some people on social media went bonkers. Not because of the scandalis shell bikini or the disempowering message of giving up your voice for a man.... But it’s because Halle Bailey is black. The complaints run along the lines of: "The actress should look like the real Little Mermaid!" By which they presumably mean the white-skinned, blue-eyed cartoon character in the 1989 blockbuster film. The hashtag #NotMyAriel quickly began trending on Twitter, and since the announcement last week, scores of fans have pledged to boycott the film. Rodge supports you Halle and may you make a splash in the wave of horrid humans everywhere.
5) And it’s to you Halle Bailey we dedicate Bigsby’s Beat of the Week...
Do you remember? When we met? That’s the day… I knew this number was the best. Which carries us to Phil Phillip’s classic, “Sea of Love.” Remember... the days of California Dreamin’, adventures above and below the sea, swim on in our hearts. This wonderful life means so much more with a sweatheart... snorkeling by your side…
