Evergreen Podcast Celebrates Our Network This International Podcast Day

Deep dive into topics well-known and niche through podcasts!

Whether you’re delving into the intricacies of Sound Design, the realm of Tabletop Gaming, or the ever-popular True Crime, the sheer diversity of content podcasts offer is bound to capture and entertain. And there is no right and wrong choice; when polled, our staff couldn’t find a clear majority favorite. That’s the beauty of podcasts!

Have you ever stopped and wondered what initially led you into the world of podcasts? Perhaps you can pinpoint the exact story, the exact moment you realized the seemingly endless entertainment at your disposal.

For many, it was the gripping realm of true crime, the launch of Serial in 2014. Others might have discovered their affinity for stories and audio blogs years earlier through sports writing or by simply following their government’s updates. And many listeners are new!

International Podcast Day is September 30 and this year, we’re celebrating our listeners and network by sharing a brief history and recommendations. It’s hard not to notice the growth our network has experienced in recent years, and while we might be a bit biased, we truly believe our shows are fantastic.

Our aim is to celebrate not only the podcasts themselves but also you, our listeners. After all, who doesn’t enjoy intellectual exploration? Our network is made up of talented individuals and we are thrilled to introduce you!

A quick history on podcasts

To find the beginning of podcasts depends on how far you want to stretch. Some source the original podcast back to the 1980s when digital audio distribution began through government channels. Some, like this Wired article by Nicholas Quah attribute the podcast to a few major events.

  • In 2005, Open Source, an American Public Radio show hosted by Christopher Lydon successfully utilized an RSS feed.

  • Shortly thereafter, and just four years after the iPod was introduced to the world, Apple revolutionized podcasting by releasing 3,000 free episodes on iTunes (see original Press Release here). This move highlighted the convenience of automatic episode downloads and expanded its ecosystem, effectively introducing podcasts to millions of new users.

  • 2008 marked a pivotal year when technology allowed cell phone users to download audio on the go, dramatically changing content consumption habits. On-the-go podcast listening allowed users to dial into daily news, true crime binges, or stand-up comedy while showering, mowing the lawn, or driving cross-country.

  • In 2014, large advertisers began investing in shows, marking the rise of large shows and expanding the growth of podcasts.

Today, almost a decade later, millions of people have adopted the platform to consume, learn, laugh, connect, relax, host, produce and share niche content in podcasts. A recent study by Sounds Profitable and Signal Hill Insights revealed that a significant 62% of podcast enthusiasts started listening within the past two years (Source, The Podcast Landscape, 2023).

So whether you’ve been an early adopter or just beginning your podcast journey, we have something for you, now accessible on the Evergreen Podcast Network.
